How the switchover works

The thermostat monitors outdoor temperature. Above the switchover point the heat pump handles heating, which is cheaper than gas at moderate temperatures. Below it the system hands off to the gas furnace, which maintains capacity in deep cold where a heat pump's output falls away. The changeover is automatic and requires no action from the homeowner.

When dual fuel makes sense

It suits homes that already have a gas connection and face genuinely cold spells — which describes most of Arkansas in January. If you have no gas line, an all-electric heat pump system avoids the connection cost entirely. If your winters are consistently severe, a straight gas furnace may be simpler.

What you are buying

An outdoor heat pump, a gas furnace, and a matched evaporator coil, all covered by one AHRI certificate. The switchover point is set during commissioning based on your local utility rates and climate.
