Communicating versus conventional

A conventional thermostat closes a circuit to call for heat or cooling. A communicating control such as Ruud EcoNet connects compatible equipment on a shared bus, so the system can modulate output, report faults with specific codes, and adjust airflow to conditions. The benefit only exists if your equipment is EcoNet-enabled — confirm before ordering.

What zoning actually does

Zoning divides a home into independently controlled areas using motorised dampers in the ductwork. Rooms that are unoccupied are not conditioned to the same setpoint as rooms that are. It works best in homes with genuine temperature variation — two storeys, large glazed areas, or rooms over a garage. It is a ductwork project as much as a control project.

Compatibility

Check the stage configuration your system needs. A two-stage heat pump with auxiliary heat requires a thermostat that supports 3H/2C; fitting a 1H/1C control leaves capacity unused.
